WE CREATE AND TRANSFORM THROUGH DESIGN

Amalia Ramírez is an architect and founder of ar.ea, Medellín-based architecture and design office in Colombia. Her studio is a team with over 10 years of experience. Amalia focuses on architectural design of varying scales and complexities in her office. They have had the opportunity to design and develop single-family homes, hotel projects, commercial spaces, residential buildings, and mixed-use projects. She has a special interest in living and its typological variations, as well as in researching and discovering references in architecture and art. She focuses on traditional atmosphere, materials, compositions and also native and tropical points in her design projects

Javad Eiraji: Would you please explain more about yourself and your professional activities

Amalia Ramírez: We are an architectural studio located in Medellín, Colombia. We offer a custom-built experience through highly detailed creative processes. We seek to be consistent with the context and environmentally responsible with the world

Javad Eiraji: What kind of projects do you focus in your office

Amalia Ramírez: We are interested in projects whose main objective is to create value through design, regardless of their scale. We enjoy challenges; thinking about new ways of inhabiting spaces, different ways of thinking about space. We are interested in experimenting with the process, making models and drawings, blending the analog and the digital. We want to be part of conversations and the creation of new real estate alternatives

Javad Eiraji: What are the main factors in your design process

Amalia Ramírez: We believe in the value of ideas to transform society. We believe in conscious, disciplined and rigorous work to create new ideas. The design process phase takes on fundamental relevance in the construction of ideas, which are nourished by three fundamental lines of development: Models as a tool in the creative process, process sections as an active catalogue of the studio's ideas and the floor plan is the tool that allows us to organize the space, but the section is what allows the elasticity of the space. We believe in the value of ideas. The approach to architecture we propose lies in its ability to go beyond its roots, using a global language as a result of a profound search for the essential. This essence emerges from exploring space and establishing a dialogue between the environment and architecture

Javad Eiraji: What is your idea about identity, culture and tradition

Amalia Ramírez: Geography, nature, materials and the past itself are the main factors that create the meaning of the tradition and culture in architecture, but if you ask about south America and Colombia, the tropical weather we have in this region, really have a big effect of the identity creation of users, lands, cities and architecture. Here in Colombia, we as the architects, pay attention to green spaces and sustainability as a part of our identity

Javad Eiraji: How can the tradition have dialogue with today and modernity

Amalia Ramírez: Traditions are important and have a direct relationship with users and societies, but society needs to be updated and be in the same level of the technology of the world. We as the architects and people and cities as users, must create interactions to speak and have dialogue
